I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a number of social networks produce kid-specific applications. We already have YouTube kids and the previously mentioned Kids’ Messenger. The challenge will be creating the walls around those areas so that they can actually do their job of serving kids and parents, creating spaces to teach kids how to be safe on the internet. How do you ensure people don’t join a Kids’ Instagram and flood it with inappropriate content? How do you handle comments so as not to attract the terrible behavior you find on the site now? It’ll be interesting to see what they come up with, and I hope some of the features may actually flow back to the full applications to help combat bad behavior there as well.
